Engine Control Module Replacement

Service of the engine control module (ECM) should consist of either replacement of the ECM of programming of the electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM). If the diagnostic procedures call for the ECM to be replaced, the replacement ECM should be checked to ensure that the correct part is being used. If the correct part is being used, remove the faulty ECM and install the new service ECM.

Caution:

• Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the control module connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the control module (battery cable, powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM)/transaxle control module (TCM) pigtail, control module fuse, jump leads, etc.) in order to prevent internal control module damage.

• Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables, or when charging the vehicle battery.

• In order to prevent any possible electrostatic discharge damage to the control module, do no touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board.

• Remove any debris from around the control module connector surfaces before servicing the control module. Inspect the control module connector gaskets when diagnosing or replacing the control module. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminant intrusion into the control module.

• The replacement control module must be programmed.

Note: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100 percent. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km (3000 mi) from the last engine oil change.

Note: It is necessary to record the remaining automatic transmission fluid life. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining automatic transmission fluid life, the automatic transmission fluid life will default to 100 percent. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining automatic transmission fluid life, the automatic transmission fluid will need to be changed at 83000 km (50000 mi) from the last automatic transmission fluid change.

Removal Procedure

1.Prepare the engine control module for replacement. Refer to Control Module References .
2.Open the bonnet.
3.Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
4.Remove the engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement .

Caution: In order to prevent any possible electrostatic discharge damage to the ECM, do not touch the connector pins.



5.Unclip the 2 wiring harness clips (2) from the bracket.
6.Unlock the 2 wiring harness plugs (1) from the engine control module and hang it aside.



7.Remove the engine control module (1).
• Unlock the holding clip (2) use a screwdriver.
• Remove the engine control module (1) from the bracket.



8.Remove the engine control module insulator (1) from the engine control module bracket (2) in arrow direction.
Unclip the retainer with a screwdriver.




Installation Procedure



1.Install the engine control module bracket to the engine control module (1) in arrow direction until the 2 retainers (2) audibly engage.



2.Install the engine control module bracket (2) to the engine control module insulator (1) in arrow direction until the retainer audibly engages.



3.Install the engine control module (1).
Slide the engine control module into the bracket (2) until its audible engage.

Caution: In order to prevent any possible electrostatic discharge damage to the ECM, do not touch the connector pins.



4.Connect the 2 wiring harness plugs (1) to the engine control module and lock them.
5.Install the 2 wiring harness clips (2) to the bracket.
6.Install the engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement.
7.Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
8.Program the engine control module, if required. Refer to Engine Control Module Programming and Setup.
9.Turn OFF the ignition for at least 5 seconds after the programming event is complete.
