2.0 CDTi SVS/Limp mode :(

Hello all

I recently bought a 2013 2.0 CDTi Elite. 35k on the clock.

On Saturday (hot day) it went into limp mode with the Service Vehicle Soon message. Engine was running at normal temp.

Took it to my local garage yesterday afternoon and they got back to me this afternoon.
They cleared the message and took it for a road test. 
- Car temp went into the red and triggered limp mode again.
- One cooling hoses was red hot, the other stone cold.
They are going to continue looking into it tomorrow as well as send me the error code.

I normally drive the car 40 miles per day on A roads ranging between 40-80mph, mix of eco-driving and fun.
I recently fitted a DPF signal light (as per the guide) and it has come on once in the last 2 weeks and completed the cycle before I got home.

Car came with 6 month dealer warranty but they are refusing to pay for 3rd party repairs/diagnostics. 
The garage is 2 hours away.

Any ideas?

It seems like their maybe some issues with your thermostat. Not opening t9 allow coolant to flow around the whole engine. Yes it will be common that they won't pay for other repairs etc as they will merely claim they cannot verify the quality of work etc etc. Annoying as it is being 2 hours away that was a bit of a risk but I would try take back and ask for a courtesy.

The error message has come back from the garage and confirmed as
P2428 - Engine Gas Temperature Sensor 1 - High temperature Low Voltage, Current history

They have reset and it is not going into limp mode anymore.


Any ideas?

Not too sure myself will have to do some research. Son the garage only reset it the fault? Didn't even look into what it is?

I had the overheating turn engine off immediately, then into limp mode twice last Friday. Got recovered home. Given a card for a vauxhall specialist. This guy came out the Saturday, 35 years experience mind. Plugged his computer in, got no error codes. So we took it for a spin. He says your car sounds really rough on tick over. Anyway, out we go, driving around & eventually the Overheating starts, warnings etc. Temp sensor 1 pretty normal, 2 is way upto 400 degrees. Long story short, he tells me sensor 2 needs replacing, I agree to him telling me this, all the while my car sounds rough. We take it to a garage friend of his, says need to check aux belt etc but not now as busy. I couldn't wait as need car, so I book it in at another garage. Turns out the water pump (the cause of the overheating) was just about disintegrated & was lucky not to wipe the Cambelt out. Got new Cambelt, aux belt and water pump for £277 fitted. Meanwhile before this the vauxhall specialist has ordered me & fitted the temp sensor 2. Now he wants paying for something I never bloody needed in the 1st place!

I'm really surprised this wasn't spotted buy the garage where u got it from or anyone else soon. I mean overheating you think a few things. Water, thermostat and headgasket and then maybe a specific sensor. But if the vauxhall specialist fitted the sensor before you took it too another garage wouldn't he of seen that it didn't f8x problen and therefore maybe offered some type of resolve?

Nah, he claims that the readings were high on the sensor (which it was) so I can't really argue with that. Still you live and learn.

I've had the same problem with my 2.0 CDTI auto - Stop Immediately Engine Has Overheated - had to be recovered home when it first happened as the car is un driveable. It only happens rarely, and seems to be during warmer temperatures. Funnily enough it just happened yesterday while driving at 60 mph on an A road.
It is related to the exhaust gas temperature sensor, and occurs when the car is doing a diesel particulate filter regen.
I had a new exhaust gas temperature sensor fitted last year, and it's still happened twice since then.
I bought a cheapish OBD code reader from Amazon and keep it in the car in case this happens - had to use it yesterday in fact - just plug it into the OBD socket under the dash (driver's side) and read and clear the fault codes - simple to use, when it's done, the car is back to normal and you can drive away. It'll get you home rather than having to wait for the recovery services.
