I would upgrade the struts as well

Hahaha yeah it's literally just the length of the spring I don't know about and can't measure as don't know how much free space there is when closed.

And yeah @tucpal I plan on doing when I find the correct spring. Already have someone ready to uprate some factory struts... Thinking of going for 420nm as factory ones are 400nm

@sheppy1 did you ever go any further with this?

Fraid not! I've got some smaller, shorter Springs but even those seem to cause the boot lid to not fully close when used and they also don't open the boot either! So would needs maybe even smaller Springs and also higher power red struts... I got bored of trying to find the right combo though lol

It's a shame would be a cracking mod to do. Tricky until somebody succesully works out what's required though could get expensive.

It may be worth looking at the Astra k as this now has open close features but as it is brand new may be awhile till they show up used

Oh sweet! Thanks for that! Is the boot around the same size and weight (that you can tell) as the Js? And does it appear to be assisted at all in the self opening aspect?

I'd say the weight is very close to the J. The bottom pic is where the tailgate struts balance it.

There are 2 struts and they feel really strong so you'd need something to mive the tailgate the 1st 6inches or so.

Cheers! Shame I have no way of knowing what the force of those struts are... Also that's the issue tbh... Getting something to move the boot the first few inches before the struts kick in... I went for the smallest springs I could find and they create a gap in the boot lid when I close it... And they're not even big enough to assist the opening of the boot!

Where did you fit the spring? that could be the issue

Did anyone get any further? What about the gtc as it has springs in the latch that push it open a bit?

Yeah I have up! Haha. I got springs which go over the strut but all they did was malewit harder to close the boot and they didn't even pop the boot open when the catch was released. Would need the perfect combo of the correct spring and a powerful strut but I didn't have the time, patience or money to buy multiple struts and springs and do a trial and error approach. Would love to get this done though!

Hi, I saw this thread by chance. I may help you for some details. I am Turkish and i am also member for Turkish Opel forums.
You may not notice that struts are mounted oppositely with springs. I mean that end points are switched.
Other tip is you may use a time relay. You need to find the signal cable to lock mechanism and connect the relay to this cable. The relay will stop the signal of unlocking when you press the button of remote key. After just 1 second, press the unlock button again. This time relay will allow the signal and unlock the hatch door. Springs will push the door! And taa-daa!!

Hey!

Thanks for the info! So do you have this mod on your car? If so, which springs did you use and do you have the factory struts?

The unlocking of the hatch shouldn't be an issue. I have a happy blue dongle which allows me to set the key up so that pressing the unlock button twice unlocks and pops the hatch

Actually, I have the springs but i have no opportunity to install them.
I am not specialist for springs, but i can say that they are green and its outer diameter is 20 mm. Length is 32 mm.
In the forum, it is said that it is ok for Astra. I hope it will be helpful.

Well, an actuator which will be activated by a button may pull the security lock between the bonnet and chasis. But, it may be dangerous while driving. If anybody pushes this button mistakenly, bonnet will open and driver will not see the road or it may even break the windshield!!

Thanks for the link Rusty. Can't seem to order them though? but I guess it does say they'll be available soon so will keep an eye on this. So annoying that the Astra J didn't get these as standard when my older Insignia did.

I've no idea when they will be available I did email to but all I got back was hopefully soon.

Now this is a mod i really could do with on my meriva... the amount of times i have my hands full with shopping and have to hold things between my legs to free a hand to press the boot release button then yank the damn thing open.

Problem 1, remote boot opening/release isnt an option on the meriva i believe, hence no button on the remote... but i've seen youtube video's of them pressing the unlock button twice to operate the boot release,

Then i'd have to figure out if there's enough free space on the struts for springs... kicking myself for not having the power struts from an electric bed i had the option of having a year ago,

Getting some springs tomorrow, place called 'Cromwells' do them for just over a quid each:   https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop?query=20x25

They also have shops all over the country, one near where im staying atm, so nipping there tomorrow to hopefully get a pair of light and medium springs.

Now remember i have a meriva... boot needs to move from vertical.. struts dont kick in till it about a foot open.. but i'm thinking my struts are weak.. i have to push the boot up sometimes... looking into getting higher pressure struts too.

An alternative is to use some door popper pusher thingies :

They'd go in place of the rubber and plastic screw in bumpers in the boot lid that cushion the boot closing now,
i did think about solenoid operates versions of the poppers above, to give the boot a good shove when the lock is released.

Which brings me onto the next problem, releasing the boot lock remotely, not an option on my car... i read the happy light show module can do that on some cars... but they dont list the meriva B... as i don't believe it is full canbus,
so there may not be a canbus controlled boot release signal (lock is electric... and the button in the tailgate is a common thing to fail on these cars.. i've replaced it once)

So i'm thinking i'll need to do some can bus sniffing and make a circuit up that will interpret 2 unlock signals from the remote in quick succession and it triggers the boot release via a relay in the wires.... OR get a remote that has the boot release button on it, and somehow get the signal of boot release via a seperate reciever that triggers the boot release motor.

To be honest it looks very hard to close the lid. It even takes him 2 tries

That'll be the problem with the die springs on the struts,

i kinda like how atm i just pull my boot down and give it a gentle push and it shuts and locks it's self,

so that'd mean an active component shoving the boot open, that retracts after it's done that job.

electric struts look so tempting, shame about their price, and all the safety stuff you need to add to stop it becoming a decapitating devise
