How to change speakers
to remove door cards please see remove door cards how to
Tools needed
*7mm Socket
*Trim tools
*Phillips Cross head screw driver
*Torx 10 bit
*Stanley knife
*Wire cutters
*Crimping tool
*Soldering Iron (optional)
Here's everything I have.
fit the speakers into the adapters
As you can see we have a speaker adapter and a piece of foam
We need to put that bit of foam around the inside of the speaker adapter like so, (it's got a sticky back)
Now put the speaker inside
Then fix it in place with the four screws
Repeat for the other 3, sit at the table in the warm with a cuppa for that part.
Now to the car.
Remove the rear card and you will see the speaker is held in by one 7mm bolt.
Undo it and pull the adapter towards you, you might need a small slot head screwdriver on the side just to start it, (there is a little metal clip at top)
Once done unplug the connector, then cut it off,
take the wire that came with your replacement speakers (I tinned them)
then join them up to the door wiring using crimps The reason I used crimp connectors is I found the factory wire seemed liked it had been burnt and I couldn't get a solder joint, (I've done 2 J's now and both were the same).
insulate with tape and then hook to speaker and fit
If you want to add sound deading then I removed the plastic waterproof sheet and used this as a template.
Re-stuck the plastic sheet
peeled the backing off the sound deading
and stuck to the door (I used my hot air gun to run round the edges Tucpal says a hair-dryer works too)
Replace door card and that's one rear door done.
Repeat for the other side.
Front Door
Next move onto the front door really is much the same as the rear.
Remove speaker and repeat the steps for the rear
cut the connector off crimp new connects on tape up hook up to speaker and refit.
The sound dreading is so not straightforward, leave the waterproof plastic there and just cut patches to fit it.
Before you go and put the door cards on the front doors you might to check the centre speaker,
I didn't have the speaker but I had the wiring for it.
have a look second hand on there the alpine workout cheap
but i had to buy two 3.5 inch speakers and sold the other
think rusty has the best option not sure what he paid
get them in bits front first then rear and then center it is better than buying bad ones
there are better alpine speakers out there and others but there not that bad at all i am happy
if you fit the cross overs the go to the box then the main speaker then to the tweeter
you can hide it were ever you want behind the glove box under the seat in the door card up to you
you can just wire them as they are and not use the crossovers if you wish also
rusty found some connectors that plug in to the original speaker plug
and fit the new speaker just saves cutting the wires
but the plugs can just be cut off and the new ones reattached no problem
i have the lower SXE alpine there are not made of paper for one and are better built
the sound is just clearer and not as distorted at higher volumes
and the coaxial center and rear certainly have a different sound quality
over all they do make a difference
but a full amp setup can not be beaten
i am sure lewis will give us all a good review on sound etc

I know I said put the component speakers in the front but I recommend swapping the coaxial to the front I did that yesterday and the sound is much improved with the coaxial in the front and the component in the rear the sound is fuller and all round better now
