Engine Temperature
#1
New Astra owner. First time poster.
I bought an Astra J 2010 1.6 SE recently. Within a few weeks the low coolant warning came on the dash, the level only dropped a little also fan wasn't kicking in and engine seemed very hot after only a short drive. Dealer replaced the thermostat and housing, within sales warranty, which had leaked some coolant and tested the fan as well.
I have only done a couple of 5 minute 20-30mph drives since, but each time have checked the engine because I am nervous and I can't hear the fan. The engine is getting really hot (to the point where rain drops are boiling when they hit it) after only that short drive. Temp gauge stays at 80C. Also the fan only kicks in for about 10 secs and goes off (presumably because it has cooled below the thermostat temp during that 10 secs). I am basing this on my previous car which never got this hot and the fan would more or less always be on once heated up.
Can anyone tell me if it is normal for the engine to be this hot. I am worried its going to overheat and blow the head gasket.

I can't say it's the same as I have the 2.0cdti.

Only real time I know my fan is on is when it does a regen other than that I've not heard it. My temp gauge sits at 90 all the time the car does get upto temp quickly.

I have the same issue with my 1.6 2010
Was getting a message saying service vehicle soon. Used the diagnostic tool and it pointed to the thermostat. I changed it and the coolant and the error message has suppressed now and fan doesn't come in full pelt any more but the engine still smells roasting hot all the time ??
