Coil spring rear buy used or new
#1
Hi All,
I just had a mot done today and it failed due to driver side rear the coil spring is broken.

Are they easy to change ? Do you buy them new or used from ebay ?

Where do you buy your parts from or do you use the local dealer like General traffic who sells car parts and consumable.

Do you need to change the one which is damaged or do you need to change the pair.

I very hardly drive the car and I and drive carefully and I am very surprised the coil spring is already broken, as the car has only done 38,000 miles and I got the car around 30,000miles. I never noticed when I am driving the car, that coil spring is broken.

Are they common problem in Astra 1.7cdti 2011 5 door.

Rear springs are a very common fault.

You could replace just the broken one.

It's up-to you really if you buy new or used, although I'd go for new.

it's up-to weather you go OEM or aftermarket.

Europarts, GSF, Autovaux or main dealer are just a few places to buy from.

(GSF have weekly offers from 40-65% off if you sign up).

If you have the SRI model you need to make sure you get the right spring.

Rear springs very easy done mine last year same issue, wheels off loosen bottom shock absorber bolts and loosen the stabiliser bars that go to the wheels while having the car on axle stands and using a Jack to gently lower the rear axle down then just remove the springs, no spring clamps required.

Just circled the parts I was talking about, 2 bolts either side but just remember and slowly lower the axle on a Jack, I have used one of rusty's pic of his car has it shows exactly what parts I'm talking about above.[Image: 502c188664b8c06f7f326da23ca38e08.jpg]

Hi Rusty,
Thank you for your reply.

I will buy the new one, as it is just economical to go for new one.

I have the Elite Model and i was looking at GSF website and they have 2 type (not for equipment variant FlexFix) and (Suspension for vehicles with lowered chassis) i have not made any modifcation on my car.

Mot guy said he can change it for £15.00 and i buy the Parts.

There is another problem i forgot to mention, as there is slight oil leak from the Sump plug, so i need to look in to this, as this was not flagged up in the last mot, as i saw this when the car was on the MOT ramp. So i will have to sort the leak out , might as well change the oil and oil filter while am at it for the coil spring.

I might as well buy Oil Sump Pan Drain Plug M14, Oil Sump plug O-Ring and Oil Sump Drain Plug O-Ring. I remember when i changed the oil and when i took the plug off, there was NO metal sump plug.

But i did not see any Metal washer. Do they have metal washer on these car Astra J ?

Thanks Iaintruten for the infromation, as my Mrs wont let me do the job myself, as she is saying £15 is cheap and you will be messing around all day.

PM your reg and I'll get you the correct part numbers for the parts needed.

They do have a metal washer to go with the sump plug.
