Gearbox Issues :(
#1
Right I'll try to describe as best as I can.

Got an astra 1.6 petrol (5 speed box). Hate the car but hey ho.

Noticed a noise a week or so ago, it almost sounds like it's whistling slightly as I was going up through the revs, mainly around 2/3k.

But tonight I've noticed something else, when I'm going slowly through traffic it sounds like somethings grating, as I move faster the grating gets faster, but when I drop the clutch it stops and starts again when clutch is lifted.

Sounds like it's coming from passenger side of the car.

Anybody like to hazard a guess as to what it might be? And what it's gonna cost to put right, hoping it aint a new gearbox job :(

It could be anything, You do have the M32 box.

Best thing would be to pop it into a garage for a look over.

Thought the 5 speed on petrol was the f17cr?

I've got a mechanic dropping the box today so hopefully will know more this afternoon.

Yes that's correct sorry I didn't know you had the 5-speed box.

If your car is now out of warranty? I'd take it to an indy gearbox specialist.
The 5 speed box is generally more reliable than the 6 speed m32. Although I did have an Astra H that had a slight whine in 5th at around 55-60. I then part ex'd it for a J with a m32, then my troubles begun lol.
It may also be a clutch issue. I don't think your has a dmf to worry about (bonus), being the 1.6vvt engine.

Yeah out of warranty

Now diagnosed.....there's a bearing gone in the gearbox and a problem with the output shaft, luckily a newish friend is a gearbox guy so he's replacing the bearing and machining the shaft, also the concentric slave cylinder is buggered so having a new clutch kit fitted which is sensible to be fair as it's all out anyways. Also needs a new clutch pipe?

Anyways all repairs and parts it's gonna set me back £630 so not as bad as it could of been.

Tommyboy,
Pleased getting it sorted.
I've had my fair share of gearbox replacements, fortunately mine have been under warranty.
What mileage was on your car when you first noticed it? My H was on a 57 plate, covered around 64k when I first noticed the noise. I didn't find the 1.6 (115), too bad in the H. Probably due to the fact the J is a heavier & larger motor.

It's around 66k so similar miles. Ex fleet car so probably been used and abused. Just had a chat with my mechanic he's gonna service it and put some new pads in aswell so will hopefully be like a brand new motor by time it comes back

It's an easy engine to service. Oil filter housing close to the top of the engine, easy to get to. Unlike my current 2.0cdti lol. I did all of my own maintenance on my previous H. Not as much now with my J. Although I'm onto my second auto box. Under warranty.
