Astra Electric parking brake
#1
Hello Everyone

I'm new in here so bear with me lol

I am a owner of Vauxhall Astra J diesel on a 60 plate and I can't use my electric handbrake I have been down to the mechanics they plugged a computer on and I got the parking brake switch replaced bought a new one from dealers and it still has the same problem all it says on the car's on board computer is SERVICE PARKING BRAKE.

Issue has been going on for a little while now so I wanted to know if you guys have a clue what it might be.

Sorry if this has been posted before I did some research before but can't find much info.

Thanks

Have you had it plugged back on since you replaced the EPB button?

You could try holding the EPB button up or down few about 60 sec irrc.

You could try pulling the fuse for the EPB and then see it resolves the issue.

Can you shed more light on what you mean by can't use it also do you have the error code?

If you can it will help us to help you as it's so brief we have very little information to go on to help you.

I can't use the parking brake at all when i want to move off or when i want to park, To move off i have to select gear and biting point and parking brake will unlock and when i want to park i have to hold the brake and turn off the car.

I don't have any error codes there is a light on the dash and on the on board computer it just says Service Parking Brake ( Will take a picture when i get to the car later)

What fuse is it for the EPB if you don't mind me asking. Thanks

I tried the fuse no luck.

Just to let you know the parking light on the left is flashing and the spanner light on the right is always on.

There's always that message on the on board computer.

Thanks

Ok tomorrow morning I will gives you steps to try.

Failing that if you can get the fault codes read this would help us narrow down the issue your facing.

The spanner light is an indication that fault codes are present and need to be read, diagnosed and rectified. A suitable code reader is needed such as Opcom.

Electronic Parking Brake Control Module

Note: Verify the rear brakes are clear of any obstacles before starting the calibration procedure. During the procedure the rear brakes will cycle several times, stay clear of all moving parts until the process is complete.

Perform the Parking Brake Calibration procedure in Module Setup.

Calibration without Scan Tool

1.Ignition ON, apply and hold the brake pedal.
2.Push and hold the electric parking brake switch down for 5-6 seconds.
3.Release the electric parking brake switch.
4.Momentarily push the electric parking brake switch down.
5.Remove the EPB MODULE fuse and reinstall. (Engine fuse-board fuse 29 30A K83 Parking Brake Control Module (J71))
6.Apply the electric parking brake.
7.Release the electric parking brake

If this fails please as I stated before get the fault codes read and let us know what they are.

Been busy for couple of days.

I did try what you told me but no luck. I took it back to mechanic and the fault is the Electric parking brake module. I rang Vauxhall to find out and they quoted £650 including VAT!

Any idea if I can get this part cheaper because £650 is ridiculous.

I have just seen a few from a quick google search and 2nd hand modules are around £120. Is the quote from VX for module or parts and labour? Fitting the module doesn't seem too labour intensive looking at the workshop manual, it has to be calibrated with a scan tool afterwards though.

The quote is for the module only no labour, I'm going to look for a second hand but I need to check if the module will work in my car. My car is a 1.3 Diesel.

A used unit should work fine just need to get the car plugged onto the MDI and calibrate the module, may even just need programming with your VIN.

Glad I have manual handbrake.
