When the DPF is doing a regen it get's very hot and there is a burning smell (more of a rubber burning smell).
Yes the fan will be on full bore and can continue to run for quite some time even after you've turned the car off.
You really need to make sure the DPF regen has finished before turning off the car as failed regens will only cause you DPF problems down the line.
