MOT Fail - Broken Rear Coil Spring

So my car failed MOT today due to the left rear coil spring having snapped. Mileage on 66K. (2012 2.0 cdti sri vx-line) I can't say I have noticed that the coil spring was knackered having driven the car etc.

Anyway decided to replace both rear coil springs so I've managed to source 2 Astra J SRI springs (Part No : 13340838) off eBay for 100 quid but have noted in the Haynes workshop manual that I should probably use new shock absorber bolts. 

Anyone know what the part numbers are for these bolts or are they of the generic type.. ?

Replacing the rear coil strings looks easy enough or am I missing something here? (Yes I have bought a torque wrench :Smile have axel stands, trolley jack )

I would imagine you would notice a snapped spring, but apearantly not Smile

If you are talking about the SHOCK absorber bolt and not a SPRING bolt (if that exists) then the partnumber can be found here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/p10/m/0/2-8/ (number 12 on the list)

I also need those bolts because I have a leaking shock absorber I need to replace. The expensive flexride ones :(

Rear springs are very common to snap & you don't notice any difference to the car.

I would advise you replace in pairs.

GSF have 60% code EGG60 (valid tomorrow 1st April) https://www.gsfcarparts.com/

You want the one for lowered chassis.

Thanks rusty. Last night I managed to find a pair online for 95 quid after discount so have ordered a pair. (local parts place was 125 for the same ones)

Yes I saw the photo of your broken coil. I can see why you wouldn't know it when driving.

Did you replace the shock absorber bolts at the same time when you swapped your springs ?

No we didn't change the bolts.

there are plenty of cars running around with broken springs
mainly due to the state of of our roads,
you won't notice unless the broken bit catches up and rattles
retrofitted = DAB+, GM dog guard, GM reversing camera

Indeed, first I knew both of my rear springs had broken was when it failed the MOT a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I use my car for work and it had to be fixed that day so I had to pay dealer prices to get mine repaired...

I took the dog out for a walk last night, we only walked about a mile and found 2 pieces of broken spring while we were out
retrofitted = DAB+, GM dog guard, GM reversing camera

Managed to replace the coil springs this weekend using a pair of axel stands. I'm not surprised the original spring broke, top and bottom bits of the original coils are very thin. The broken bit was still trapped between the spring and the rubber mount.

The only curve ball using axel stands was that it was impossible to lever the shock absorber bolt off on the right hand side. Not enough space for my homemade extention pole so I had to remove the bolt for the anti roll bar to get the required leverage.
