Yes they are more pricey but still can be risky in the wrong hands. Tuning box was an easy option at the time.
1st prize for me would have been a Bluefin superchips install but not available for the stop start edition

Decided to take the plunge and have the car remapped this coming Friday. Before and after dyno runs included.

Put some top notch fuel in it if you can before the remap so you can achieve the best possible results on the dyno.

Will do. Afraid there are no shell stations in Ireland. Very few super market fuel outlets too. Don't use either.

A local tuner, not 100% sure which company he gets the maps in from the UK.
He offered me the option of a power or economy map. Naturally I said power.

Well that was disappointing. (Not brexit content ) Travelled about 60 miles across country only to find that the tuner didn't have the right gear to write back to the ecu. He's done a few Opel insignias 2.0 before but they appear to have the older chip on the ecu motherboard? 1st vauxhall astra he's tried and was a little perplexed.
Anyway, managed to at least get the before dyno run it. Mixed results really, power is 154hp but 409nm of torque. So, 11hp down and 59nm of torque more than standard. The dyno was installed a few months ago so it is a fairly new installation. It was calibrated when installed apparently.

Thats so disappointing, I am assuming they previously remapped the 160bhp Insignia ?
Wow, you have seriously impressive torque, but, as you say, power is down a little
I am sure when I have read rolling road figures on the 160bhp diesel versions they all pretty much read over on the bhp front

Yeah its quite disappointing but anyway. Yeah must be the 160 insignia he's had in, even those he had to have the ecus removed for remapping. (I thought the pre stop / start ones could be remapped via the obd?)
There are hardly any Opel Astra 2.0 Cdti here, so 99% of them are vauxhalls astras. Not that many either by the looks of it.
He did say to me that he might get some of the newer alienware remapping gear as he has the same problem with the newer bmws. (locked down ecu)

In hindsight, I should have taken my racechip along with me. Might have been able to do a before / after dyno run.

should have took the race chip
from what i know vauxhall made changes to the ecu after 2012 on the 2.0 cdti and mapping is very hard
if possible at all now thats why i went for the tuning box
same problems on the insignia start stop also sure the start stop is actually 158bhp but they call it a 160
but you have base figgers now for the standard map so get a run with the chip

Yeah, front one can be pulled off easy enough. Rear one needed some convincing. Didn't have any fishing line so used one of those bright orange plastic tools which are used for removing facia panels/covers.

(This post was last modified: 8:th-Sep-2016, 21:55:38 by marcus.)
Been a while since I've done an update on this thread.
Since the last one I reinstalled the Racechip One and changed the factory settings to performance level 2 as the standard settings only really sharpened up response etc. and added a wee bit of acceleration.
Drove the car by the scruff of the neck for a week or 2 and finally managed to put the car into a permanent limp mode. (SVS error)
Had to take the car to the main dealer to sort for me. Removed the Racechip beforehand. 70 quid later, New dpf pressure sensor, software update and manual regen of the dpf.
The car certainly had a new lease of life and goes much better. (maybe dpf was a little clogged.?)
The tuning box has removed forever. In fairness it never skipped a beat on the standard settings but the standard settings were less effective after the vx software update.
Anyway, I still miss some of the responsiveness of the tuning box so decided to pursue the pedal box route.
Had a few cheeky bids in on eBay with one of the German resellers but they weren't biting. 130-140 quid.
So tonight just as I was weighing up my options, I spotted a 2nd hand pedal box in excellent nick for 80 quid. It was previously used on an astra J but 1.4 non turbo petrol. I have read that the astra J ones are all the same so bought it anyway.
Should hopefully arrive next week sometime.
Had to

I hope you did an oil & filter change also as the faulty sensor would of chucked loads of diesel into the oil.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Tell me more about this. They certainly didn't change the oil and filter.
Their code reader picked up the dpf sensor error and they replaced it as a precaution. I. E. It may have actually have still been worked fine but the tuning box pushed it over the top..? Dunno, can't be sure.
I had visions of much bigger problems like new turbo etc. So I was happy to let them swap the sensor out anyway. I don't really have time to visit the main dealer on a regular basis.

Check your oil level, if it's above the max see if it smells of diesel.
I just had a DPF sensor fail and had 1L of diesel in the oil. Although diesel is an oil so it's lubrication it's also a possible issue for engine runon and could lead to sump fire. plus with the level being above the max it's also not good for the engine.

Mine suffered from regen failure for a couple of days in July and pumped diesel into the sump, it was way past the maximum. As soon as I got the car back I had an oil and filter change.

Alright, just checked the oil in the car and it is marginally over the full mark. Also I can't smell any diesel in it, smells just like used oil. Cheers for the warning though ..

More money.... . So over the last month or so I've been losing air out of the right rear tyre. No screws or nails are visible in the tyre. It drops about 0.5 bar in a week or so. (2.2 to 1.7) I took it in to have it sorted and the guy found what he thought was the offending hole and put a plug in it.
Anyway, 2 weeks later and the puncture persists so I took it elsewhere to be sorted. I watched the guy use spray bottle with soap to diagnose where the problem was. Turns out there is no hole but rather the air is leaking out in multiple places just up from where the rim meets the tyre on the inside of the wheel.
So it appears that the tyre is past is sell by date.... Looks like the original tyre that the car was sold with which is a conti sport 3 manufactured in 2012.
I can't say I've had this happen to me before. Anyway, he had no stock so he's ordered in some uniroyal rain sport 3s for me. 160 per corner....

I get them second had, 2x 235 40 19 conti sport 3 with 7+mm tread for around £100 an axle on eBay. As long as they aren't damaged, had repairs and have loads of tread I'm not too fussed that they aren't new.

£160 a corner is damn expensive, I have often thought of going up to 19"s from my 18"s but the tyre price has put me off...........

Yeah the 40 profile on that size is pricey. The 35 profile on same 235x19 is about 50 quid per corner cheaper for the same tyre when I last looked.

Picked up the pedal box at lunch time and immediately fitted it in the car park as you do.
Thought I had set
it to Sport (middle led) and not sport plus and took it around the block. The car wanted to leap forward with the slightest prod of the pedal. Decided to read the manual afterwards and then I noted that it was actually set to sport plus. Haha.
Anyway have changed it to sport for the trip home. (first led) Will update post later on.

Debadged the car on the weekend. Sri badges on the fenders gone. 2.0 Cdti badges gone from the rear. Also picked up the Turbo badge at lunch time. Fitted it, looks smart.

Quick review on the pedal box. I have to say that I am surprised at how well it works. The throttle is super responsive even on sport mode. (have it set to sport +3 atm)
The thing I really liked about the tuning box I had was that it sharpened up the throttle response but this is in another league all together.
The tuning box probably put down more power at peak rpm/torque but it didn't respond as quickly as the pedal box. Pedal box is also not as rough as the tuning box once you put your foot down.
For tomorrow's trip to work I might switch it back to sport plus for a few laughs.
Money well spend. Racechip one for sale.....

I'm reading this with great interest also. Are pedal boxes not affected by Vauxhall updates like tuning boxes are?

Ahh, worth keeping in mind then! Interesting to read these reviews. Does a pedal box act the same way a tuning box does?

Sounds like your trip to work will be fun tomorrow It appears to exaggerate the throttle input which speeds up the action on the engine end. The car certainly loses traction much easier when the road is a bit greasy.
Took about a minute to fit. Managed to route the cable and controller into the compartment under the steering column. Not too elegant for now but I will look refine it.
