Gumball 3000, expertise and a Chris Knott partner...
Posted by: ChrisKnottIns - 22:nd-May-2017, 11:36:56 - Forum: Chris Knott Insurance - No Replies

Hi,

I thought some of you might like to see this interesting vid featuring one of the insurers we use to underwrite the club's car insurance scheme - ERS.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP7Bvq2-uVU

Gumball 3000 organisers were looking for a specialist insurer to underwrite this year's event - a motor risk that includes Saudi princes, oligarchs and celebrities, driving prestige cars and imported vehicles worth over £30 million on a 3,000 mile journey through 10 countries. Most insurers ran a mile.

ERS got under the skin of one of the world's most unique motor risks to underwrite the Gumball 3000 rally.

You'll see Chris Knott has partnered with insurers who, like us, know what they're doing when it comes to assessing motor risks, are proper car enthusiasts and take great effort to understand the needs of those they're covering.

ERS has long respected the work we're doing with car club members and will help us to win your business when you ask us to quote for your car at the next renewal.

Please give us a call in the mix when searching for quotes and we'll help you find the best insurance deal this year.

QUOTELINE: 0800 917 2274 - remember to mention this club/forum to access all the benefits.

ONLINE: complete brief contact details for a callback - https://www.chrisknott.co.uk/CarQuote

best,
Nick

Recent testimonials...

"I just wanted to send you a message to say many thanks to CK Insurance and Tabitha especially who dealt with my initial query and quotation. Today I have taken out my car insurance with yourselves and it was a nice experience all-round. Tabitha was professional and easy to speak to and answered all the questions I had relating to the cover. I'll definitely recommend others to try you for a quote. You saved me over £375 compared to my renewal quote with *******, and now a chance of F1 tickets! Superb." ZakR, BabyBMW forum

"Just saved £210 on my 9-5 and £167 on my 9-3 Big grin Many thanks Chris Knott." zagato, UKSaabs forum

"My last insurance wouldn't cover brake or suspension mods even though they would make the car handle better, but would insure exhaust and air intakes, which sort of add more performance. Anyway, I found Chris Knott were best for me. Club Sponsor." Dan France-Athayde, Hyundai Coupe Owners Club UK

"Just called up for a quote. Doing it all by phone is beautifully antiquated. However, there was a refreshing degree of honesty with the process. In my case they COULD match any sensible quote and were honest that if I wanted the bare minimum I might be able to get it marginally cheaper but highlighted the coverage differences. The breakdown cover similarly has some pretty good terms for the price. Waiting on my old insurer (£650 more expensive) to post out the paperwork." Cyber_hawk, Z4 Forum

"I have my 480 on classic car insurance through Chris Knott this year; a better package than the previous one I had through ****** **** (in particular the insurance company in question is UK based and well known, as against Gibraltar based and completely unknown to me) and significantly cheaper. And I was very impressed with the service!" dcw, Volvo Owners Club

  Intermittent engine rattle noise
Posted by: Weeman424 - 21:st-May-2017, 22:05:28 - Forum: Astra-J/GTC - Replies (1)

Hi all new to here bought my first Astra 3monthd ago it's an Astra j 1.6 cdti ecoflex 136ps. The problem I am having is an intermittent loud rattleing noise on startup. It sounds like it's coming from the throttle body/egr area. Sometimes rattle clears after a few seconds sometimes stays if you turn the car off and restart the rattle is gone seems like something is sticking if that makes sense. I have no eml lights on. Also got an intermittent slight rough idle as well not shore if the problems are linked or not really hope someone could shed some light on this as it's starting make me wish I Neva moved to Vauxhall :(

Kotix Custom ROM for the Android S160 (M072) Head Unit
Posted by: marcus01 - 21:st-May-2017, 13:31:00 - Forum: ICE - Replies (2)

Due to Sheppy's original thread for the S160 (M072) Android HU Installation getting off topic/polluted with Kotix ROM chatter, I thought it might be worthwhile setting up a separate thread for the Kotix ROM discussion.

For those not familiar with the Kotix ROM, it is a custom ROM for the S160 unit (Not just the M072 - M072 is the Astra J version of it) which provides some additional functionality and also overcomes some of the limitations of the standard ROM.

The main benefits are:-

1. User data partition for apps/data can be increased from 1 Gig to 2 Gig, 4 Gig or 8 Gig.
2. Root access to the device
3. 2 or 3 additional skins for the launcher including new skins for radio, music player, bluetooth etc.
4. Some basic colour customisation for the music and radio apps.

I might have forgotten 1 or 2 other benefits.

The Kotix website is at :-

http://kotixworld.blogspot.ie/

The cost of the Kotix ROM is GBP 15 / EUR 20.

Since Oct/Nov 2016, the Kotix ROM requires an unlock code from the seller to stop unauthorised use of the ROM.

I'll try and grab some of the Kotix questions posed in the other thread and add them to this thread if possible.

Thanks

This is a link the the latest skins available for the Kotix ROM.

Installing the Kotix ROM. (Mini Guide)

Whilst I realise that a lot of people would balk at the thought of trying to flash the ROM on the Android Unit, it's really not that difficult once you get your head around it.

This isn't meant to be the definitive guide on how to do it but rather a high level overview of the process itself.

1. Visit the Kotixworld website and buy the software. Payment is via Paypal
2. Once he (Marco) has received payment, he will send you a link to his shared Google Drive which contains all versions of the Kotix ROM.
3. The latest version is always in his Root folder. (i.e. 3 x RAR Files - i.e. Compresses Zipped files)
4. He tends to have 3 versions of his ROM in the foot folder for 2 Gig, 4 Gig or 8 Gig configuration. The 2 or 4 Gig version would probably be sufficient.
5. Create a new folder on your PC.
6. Unzip the RAR file to this folder. I use 7ZIP. (i.e. 7Zip Manager is a ZIP/UNZIP tool which is free to download - http://www.7-zip.org/download.html )

The Folder Structure should look something like this:-
      - Internal_Sd
      - Preinstall
      - SystemApp
      - Wincacfg

In the Root of the folder will be approx 10 other files.

7. Email Marco for a Unlock.code file if he hasn't already emailed it to you.
8. He will send you this file as an attachment that should be saved to the WINCACFG folder.
9. WINCACFG folder also contains the Default Wallpaper if you want to change it. (i.e. Copy a different JPG file to this folder and rename it to "default_wallpaper.jpg")
10. PREINSTALL folder can be used to install specific APK files during the flash process. (i.e. Keep this to a minimum as they are a few APKs there which conflict with the System APKs which can cause missing menu options)

11. Format a SD card for the installation process.
12. Copy all the files and folders as-is onto the SD card.
13. Make sure that the Head Unit has been powered off 30 mins so that it is no longer in hibernate mode.
14. Insert the SD Card into the GPS card slot and turn on the ignition.
15. The unit should boot into the Android Update configuration screen. The process should take about 15-20 minutes.
16. The default language after the ROM flash is Russian so the first thing you need to do is find the Language option in Settings which are in Russian of course to switch it back to English. (Haha....good luck)

NB. Note that you will need to log into your Google Account again as this will have all been lost.
And you will also need to re-download all your apps again.

Hope this all makes sense.

  Progress thread: Frank's Insignia
Posted by: zzattack - 17:th-May-2017, 23:16:55 - Forum: Members car's progress threads - Replies (20)

Been browsing this website for a bit now, and since I've got a few plans I figured it'd be cool to keep a progress log of whatever I'll do to the car. It's not an Astra like most of you guys drive, it's not a right-hand drive either and in fact it's not even a Vauxhall but I still hope I'm welcome Smile

So that's her, exchanged my SEAT Leon MK1 for this 2009 Opel, a 09 plate equivalent if I'm not mistaken. Engine is a 2.0 CDTI as I drive a fair bit.

Factory options are pretty okay, it's got DVD800 navi and bluetooth, park distance sensors front and rear. It's also lacking a few options that I want, so I'm looking into adding whatever's feasible Smile

For now, plans include:
- getting proper wheels, gonna be looking for some 18"s once the current ones are used up
- remap; I'm close to the German border and supposedly they're pretty good at that stuff
- sound system upgrade; I've took most of the good stuff from the SEAT
- installing fog lights; I've got all the materials for it sourced
- replace the DVD800 with an android-capable unit; gonna build some custom electronics so DVD800 panel works

First step in preparing for the audio upgrade was to add a killswitch.
Looking at the battery department, it's gotta go either between their the positive pole and fusebox, or I'll have to put it near the negative somehow.

Since there's 2 wires going from the negative side I opted to install it on the positive. The downside of this is that the contacts of the killswitch may absolutely not touch the chassis, so that's why if possible placing it on the negative side is prefered.

Luckily there's just enough space between the battery and the fusebox for the killswitch to sit in and there's no chassis/ground in the vicinity, so we've found a good spot:

To be safe, I wrapped it with enough isolating tape so that in the event of a collision, even if the switch moves and touches the chassis somewhere, there's a good probability it still won't short out.

All good, now I just had to cut away some plastic in the original battery cover so that it closes properly. It got pretty dark by now so I'll leave the proper filing for tomorrow, but here's a pic:

Looking to get a pressure washer that I can use snow foam with, don't want to spend a fortune £180-200 is about the limit for now.

Any recommendations on the pressure washer and the snow foam would be great.
