How-To GID Colour change

Hi all,

After a request for more information on the GID, I checked and had some rubbish photos kicking about and said I would pull together a quick how-to.

Please note, I am using Tapatalk on a phone with 4% battery to write this, let me know if the inevitable errors.

First up, follow the other how-to guides to remove the centre console trim, followed by the heating controls, ICE controls, dvd/cd unit and after removing those 6x 7mm hex bolts, the GID surround will simply pull away.

The GID itself will be rather obvious on how to remove from the trim, leaving you with the GID inside two pieces of black plastic.

First up, release the clips on the black plastic to split into two halves (clips on already split unit highlighted)

Next up, lift the dark grey retaining clip on the ribbon connector to remove the ribbon out. I don't recall it being necessary, however I'd rather undo it and be grateful, than leave it connected and rip it.

Then release the PCB & LCD from the remaining housing via the white tabs.

You can remove the LCD frame via the small tabs

Again, pay attention I don't think it is necessary but took the opportunity to give it a good clean.

Now you can release the PCB via the clips at the top and bottom and viola:

I bought kingbright from Farnell UK, costing something like 12p each, far cheaper than the 99p each from eBay i could find!!

rear led lights

I'm in the same boat as a previous owner, new 2017 gtc which im looking to buy is on the forecourt  with the older rear lights, want dealer to fit the led versions, so is it a matter of getting the lights and the wiring kit and just fitting, or is there something else needed.

Steering wheel Switch Conversion

Steering wheel switch LED conversion.

You will need some PLCC-2 the amount needed varies depending on the switch I recommend the ones from this seller on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121277975850?_...EBIDX%3AIT I have had 100's of LED'S from this guy.

So you have the switch

First thing we need to do is open it up, there are 4 clips 2 each side un-clip them with a small screwdriver.

Once you've un-clipped one side you should be able to lift the backing off.

Now carefully you need to remove the PCB board and rubber cover (Not under this are little white plastic lugs which can fall out).

Next step remove the rubber and start your LED conversion. I've marked with a red line which is negative for you.

To get the correct polarity of the new LED you will see the corner is cut this is the negative end, see image below.

How-to Instrument Cluster LED Conversion

LED'S needed are

4x PLCC-2 side load I recommend KINGBRIGHT they are by far the brightest LED'S http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351305339638?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

12x PLCC-2 I recommend the ones from this seller on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121277975850?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I have had 100's of LED'S from this guy.

To remove the Instrument Cluster please see the following How-to

First is to remove the IPC from the car

Then undo the 3 screws outlined in red

Then unclip the black front I've marked some of the clips but work your way round

Remove the gauge covers I've marked the clips

Next remove the needles with two spoons

Turn the unit over and undo the 2 screws marked in green

Now unclip the unit I've marked one clip but just work your way round

Carefully lift cable lock upwards

Then unclip the 2 clips at the bottom then the top

The picture below is marked up as follows

12x Red is PLCC-2 white LED'S (you may have 2 LED'S here one will be RED you need to change the ones with yellow tops) The White start at D15 and end at D26 the Red start at D81 and end at D92.
4x Blue is PLCC-2 Red needle LED'S
4x Green is PLCC-2 Side load Up-level display

To get the correct polarity of the new LED you will see the corner is cut this is the negative end, see image below.

I've also marked the negative side on the board for each LED

Fit it all back together and that's it your LED conversion is done.

For Anybody who has the Black rings and you want to add the White rings for colour you will need a donor IPC to get the rings and dial sheet make sure this is a match for your's.

If you find you missing 4 LED's you can add these and use the donor IPC to get the resistors you need.

For LED D25 you need to take resistor R329

For LED D24 you need to take resistor R325

For LED D18 you need to take resistor R308

For LED D19 you need to take resistor R121

Change of LED color in Speedometer

I changed the leds of the uplevel display in my speedometer, but just have a look

How-to Stereo and centre console LED conversion

This is How-to for changing the LEDs in the stereo and centre console switches

Tools required
Stubby Philips s/driver
Small flat blade s/driver
7mm socket
T8 driver
Fine tip soldering iron
Qty 30 805 smd leds for stereo

Start by removing the following parts. 1. Rubber mat 2. Plastic cover 3. Gear gaiter

I removed the gear gaiter completely by pushing in the 2 black tabs and lifting the blue collar. You can remove the 2 screws holding the centre console surround, then remove the surround completely.

There a 4 7mm bolts to be removed

2 are located behind two flaps by the centre air vent

Disconnect the elec connectors circled in yellow, remove T8 screws circled in red and remove the stereo buttons from the housing

Remove the 2 T8 screws marked blue in above pic and unclip front panel from 2 small tabs

Remove knobs and rubber cover to expose the circuit board

Tabs for removing TC/Eco/Park assist Switches 1 at each end of the switch

Carefully remove the label and remove switch back unclipping 4 tabs

Replace the lower 805 smd led

Remove 2 7mm bolts holding stereo and display surround

Remove the switch electrical connectors

Door lock switch assembly

Remove the rear of the switch assembly

Qty 2 PLCC-2 leds required(lefthand 2)

How for the following switches

EPB switch

Tools required
7mm socket
T20 driver
Rachet
Small screwdriver
Qty 1 PLCC-2

Using the info in Tucpal thread remove the Centre console and EPB switch

Once switch is removed

Split switch using these tabs

The LED to be changed is in blue. To make it easier I removed the lefthand switch(3 connections underneath)

Roof console

Tools required
T20 driver
Small screwdriver
Qty 1 PLCC-2 sideled

Sorry no pics
Remove the bezel around the interior light
Remove the 2 exposed screws and remove the roof console
Release the electrical connector
Remove the interior light from the roof console

Once light is removed remove the clear tubing

Then bend these copper tabs (carefully)

There are 2 small tabs holding the PCB in

PCB LED for the switches circled red. I also added ambient lighting(early models may already have this my 13 plate didn't) You need to add a 2nd PLCC-2 sideled in the yellow circle and qty 3 619R smd resistors circled in blue

This is where the 2mm hole needs adding

Heater Panel LED Conversion

For anyone that wishes to change the colour of the SMD LED in the gear surround.

Tools required
Stubby Philips s/driver
Small flat blade s/driver
7mm socket
Fine tip soldering iron
Qty 14 805 10 x 0805 Blue LED (SMD) - Ultra Bright - UK - 1st Class Post | eBay and 1 PLCC-2 PLCC-2 SMD / SMT LEDs - Red, Blue, Green, White, Orange, Yellow - UK | eBay , if you have heated seats you'll need 2 extra 805, smd led. For dual zone climate panel you need qty 20 805 leds

Start by removing the following parts. 1. Rubber mat 2. Plastic cover 3. Gear gaiter

Remove heater panel with these 3 tabs

Cover removed

Remove PCB and then remove control knobs( don't mix them up), remove rubber protector

This shows the location of the heater panel leds the yellow circles are 805's, red circle 1206 and black 805 for heated seats

This is dual zone climate yellow circles being back lit and black circles heated seat back lit

This shows the original red leds

Not sure whether to leave the button leds red, I think having the buttons blue would be too much. What are you opinions?

Not completed the install as I've got a couple of LEDs that don't work.

Window switch LED colour change

For any member wanting to change the LED colour in the window switch

Tools required
T20 torx driver
Small flat head
As required 10 x 0805 Blue LED (SMD) - Ultra Bright - UK - 1st Class Post | eBay]805 smd LED One led in both rear and passengers switches. Drivers 2 leds(front elec only) or 5 leds(front & rear elec windows)
Fine tipped soldering iron

3 door owners need to follow all steps but 5 door owners can miss out steps 1-4

Remove the black insert carefully, the ends move inwards as there' a right clip on each end

Undo the one T20 screw holding the window switch in

Carefully raise the front edge of the switch through this hole

Once front edge is raised slide forward

Then raise the rear edge slide the switch backwards to release from behind the handle

Disconnect the Elec connector by pushing the little tab

To separate the switch from the housing unclip qty 4 clips

The 2 parts separated( at this point you could follow Cameron how-to and wrap the cover)

To gain access to the LED PCB unclip qty 6 clips

Gear surround LED colour change

For anyone that wishes to change the colour of the SMD LED in the gear surround.

Tools required
Stubby Philips s/driver
Small flat blade s/driver
Fine tip soldering iron
Qty 2 4040 smd led from top-quality-tools | eBay

Start by removing the following parts. 1. Rubber mat 2. Plastic cover 3. Gear gaiter

I removed the gear gaiter completely by pushing in the 2 black tabs and lifting the blue collar. You can remove the 2 screws holding the centre console surround

Then carefully remove the centre console surround, there are several clips and a small amount of force is required. This pic shows some of the clips

Then remove the AUX/USB unit, this has a plastic clip on each side and requires a small careful bit of force( I did this to make access easier to the elec connector)

Disconnect the elec connector(This is showing the connector from non EPB models)

I removed the 2 metal screw clips to avoid damage to the led housing tube. Unclip the qty5 led housing tube clips

Slide the LED housing tube forward slightly to de-locate from front mount point

This is the elec connector form EPB models

Unclip qty 10 clips to separate the clear tube from the black plastic

This shows to 2 parts seperated

To get access to the LED PCB unclip qty 3 clips on each end of the cabling

This shows the LED PCB inside the housing

This is the PCB removed.

De-solder the LED and replace with new LED and rebuild everything in reverse.

The finished item showing it being bench tested and installed into the car
