Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 7:th-Jun-2014

No I haven't total forgot all about it I will look into it again later.

Gas bonnet strut - safetyman - 7:th-Jun-2014

Yes also interested. Can't quite figure out why a new vxr does not have this has standard. I am aware that they can be fitted to other cars. So any info would be great.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 7:th-Jun-2014

I would be interested too... I don't think any of my cars have had gas struts & its something I've always wanted.

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 7:th-Jun-2014

I did get a pair from a G but they are too long.

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 8:th-Jun-2014

Just thought does anyone if the new ford focus has them?

Gas bonnet strut - tucpal - 8:th-Jun-2014

Hi Rusty2009,

The new focus ST does not have them either, I had a 13 plate ST at the time. I find it hard to believe that with new exclusive type cars they can't just fit them as standard so much better than what they do do fit. I know for the Focus ST you can purchase gas struts for them, so if anyone can help with the VXR that would be great.

Cheers

Thanks for that info safetyman.

I did some measurements yesterday. The tailgate struts will be too long need some shorter ones similar to the Vec B. There's a bonnet rubber adjuster in the way for long struts

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 9:th-Jun-2014

Baz where are thinking of mounting?

i thought of top nut on hinge plate then down to wing I'll get a pic tomorrow.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 9:th-Jun-2014

These are some measurements I took

1, 42.5cm
2, 35.5cm
3, 28.5cm
4, 40.5cm
5, 30.5cm
6, 19.5cm

I was thinking of either position 2,3,5 or 6

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 9:th-Jun-2014

I thought of 1 but looking at that 5 might be best, although I think it's different on mine on drivers side will look tomorrow.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 9:th-Jun-2014

On mine 1 and 4 would catch on the rubber adjuster

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

Gas bonnet strut - Cameron UK - 9:th-Jun-2014

2,3,6 are too steep, would shut I don't think
1, 4 something would need to be done with the rubber
5 is looking good

1 is best but they might be able to supply a bracket to step it to the side of the rubber

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 9:th-Jun-2014

I need to try and get measurements with the bonnet shut

Where did u get that pic from?? The strut would need a lot of PSI as it would be heavy.

It would shut down nicely

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 9:th-Jun-2014

This is from a Vec B which uses 2 struts. I can't see the Astra bonnet being heavier than a Vec B

Oh I didn't realise it was off a vectra, yeh it would be fine, how u gonna adapt it??

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 9:th-Jun-2014

Not sure yet will wait til they arrive. I hoping the hinge part is similar to the Astra.

No Worries Rusty2009

Gas bonnet strut - Gatch - 10:th-Jun-2014

This was one of the first things I noticed when I bought my GTC, after buying the zafira tourer, which has gas struts, I thought it was a given that the GTC would have them. Never crossed my mind that I could fit them aftermarket. I will be watching this thread for more info. Keep up the good work fellas.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 10:th-Jun-2014

Hinges have been bought and despatched so will know soon if there any good

You could get a little business going if they fit lol, lots of people would be wanting them, obviously at a special price for fellow moderators hahaha

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 13:th-Jun-2014

Received the Vec B hinges yesterday and had a quick look. The hinges are bigger than the original so I think adapting might be quite hard. I should be able to use the rams though

Gas bonnet strut - Migwell030744 - 13:th-Jun-2014

Would they be safe enough when it is windy. When you think about what we have now, which is at the front of the bonnet it can control both directions of push from wind, but a little short ram would have a lot to contend with being at the back of the bonnet, and therefor a lot more work for it to do to hold the bonnet steady. I don't want my head chopped off of my windscreen smashed for that matter.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 13:th-Jun-2014

Thr Vec B uses 2 rams which I intend to use and they easily hold a Vectra bonnet which is heavier

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 13:th-Jun-2014

Baz I just thought my Vec B had longer struts.

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 13:th-Jun-2014

I'll messure my ones think there about 30cm

It will still be secured at the front though just the way it's held up instead of the stick

Gas bonnet strut - Migwell030744 - 13:th-Jun-2014

I was meaning when the bonnet is up. If the wind gets hold of the bonnet with just those short rams holding it, at the back of the bonnet, that is a lot to expect those stays / rams positioned there to do the same at keeping the bonnet in the up position as opposed to the stick which stops the bonnet both going further up and through the windscreen or coming down on your head.

Cameron UK Wrote:My dad's y reg vectra had them and that's 15 years ago!!!
Yeh , the Vectra had it then it didn't , my last H had one my SRi J doesn't . .

Far canal you couldn't make it up . You can wrongly assume that once a feature is on a Vx that it is there to stay . Similarly , there is no sport button on the J. .

Gas bonnet strut - tucpal - 16:th-Jun-2014

I am sure they were removed to get a higher rate in the crash tests as they can enter the cabin in a crash and a front one is safer or something like that

Any luck on this yet???

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 8:th-Jul-2014

Not as yet been waiting for a reply from a company that make the brackets for the struts to fit to.

Gas bonnet strut - Tottybye - 9:th-Jul-2014

Would Fiat Giulietta Struts be anygood?? Or even Alfa 147?

I'll have to look at the strut and how it mounts

Im no expert it was just a thought.

Gas bonnet strut - tucpal - 28:th-Jul-2014

moved thread to research should be easier for you to find and come back too.

Gas bonnet strut - Rusty2009 - 30:th-Sep-2014

Gas bonnet strut - cornishtaz - 7:th-Jan-2015

Those brackets don't look to healthy also the struts don't seem to give alot of assistance when lifting the bonnet.

I've emailed a company that manufacturers struts, brackets and strut ball joints just waiting for a reply.

I've been looking at the Insignia setup
