HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 10:th-May-2014

HOW TO FOR THE LED DRL ERROR FREE BULBS FOR THE ASTRA J 5 DOOR.

INFO.........

The GTC does not need load resisters the LED bulbs will be plug and play error free.

This is what you will need for the LED DRLS.

Two LED DRL bulbs. 7443. 50/50
four 50w 6,ohm Load Resisters.
some clips x8 or solder and shrink wrap optional.
and some extra 8,ohm cable red and black.

So you can have extra cable to move the resisters
somewhere safe as you dont get much on the load resisters.

However to make the LED DRL Dim Down in Side Light mode Error free
an extra set of Load Resisters and a Extra 4 clips will be needed.

The bulbs look fantastic with a little projector on the front of the LED
and SMD,S on the outside of the LED so they are really bright and cover 360 degrees
the fit of the bulb in the holder is really good and there is no chance these will come out at all
the Load Resisters have two holes for screws so fitting these will be easy and safe
they do get Very Hot and should be Mounted some were safe so they will not Melt Anything.

STEP ONE.........

Remove the air filter box and the washer bottle etc
like you would when you change your DRL bulbs
follow this how to and remove the bits and the bulbs out of the holders.

http://www.vxoc.org.uk/forum/Thread-How-to-change-drl-and-h7-bulbs

Also before you start any work put a cloth down the air intake pipe
so you do not drop anything down there.

STEP TWO............

Fit the 4 Load Resisters Two Load Resisters to each DRL
placing them some where Safe and Preferably fit them to the Body of the car
to Something Metal as they do get Very Hot and may Melt Plastic
i Drilled a Pilot hole and used a self taper screw to keep them in Position
look before you Drill and make sure it is in a Safe Place.

STEP THREE.........

Make a small hole in the DRL Covers so you can get the 4 wires through from the Load Resisters
these wires will stay outside the Cover and any clips will be inside the cover
so make sure this is Threaded through Before you clip the Wires Together.

STEP FOUR.........

Look at the back of the DRL bulb you will see 4 Numbers
three wires marked 2 3 4 and 1 is blank
2, is side light, 3, is DRL Positive, 4 is Negative.

how to wire the Load Resisters up to the Correct Wires on the DRL
Snap Connectors are sent with the kit
Clip the Negatives from the Two Load Resistors
to the Negative on the DRL
in Position 4 you can use two Clips for this.
or you can Splice, Solder and Shrink Wrap if you wish.

Clip the Positive from one Load Resister
to the Positive on the DRL in Position 2, Side Light

Clip the Positive from the other Load Resister
to the Positive on the DRL Position 3, DRL.

Here is how the Clips Work.

I was sent 4, clips and 2, Load Resisters
but I recommend 8, clips and 4, Load Resisters
Two Load Resisters are needed for Each DRL
to make them Work Correctly and DIM Down in Side Light mode Error Free
Here is a Diagram to show how to Wire them in Correctly.

STEP FIVE...........

Refit the new LEDs Back into the Light Units
and push the Connectors in too the Gaps
Then Refit the DRL Covers you can put a Bit of Silicone
over the four Wires to close any Gaps in the Hole you made
Refit the Air filter Box and Test the new Lights are all Working Correctly
DO NOT start the Engine when the Air filter Box is not Back in Position.

The bulbs are Error Message Free and will not Upset the Canbus.
make sure Everything is fitted Correctly and you are all Done.

THE RESULTS........

LED, IN DRL MODE.

The LED are much brighter and whiter than the PIAA.

LED IN SIDE LIGHT MODE.

They will dim down from side light mode but they still look nice and bright.

LED AND MAIN LIGHTS Phillips extreme vision.

Here is a night time comparison LED vrs PIAA.

PIAA DRL

LED DRL

The LED is a purer white light and brighter than the PIAA.

And here are a few pics of the LED DRL,S AT NIGHT

LED DRL,...

LED, IN SIDE LIGHT, DIM MODE.

LED AND MAIN LIGHTS

They fill the light unit much better than the PIAA did.

These LED DRLS are Fantastic they are so much Better than the Standard Bulbs and the PIAA
the Pictures Really do not do them Justice at all they are a Really good Upgrade
and no Error Message is a Bonus and they will also Dim Down.

You Can Not just Add Two Positive Wires from one Load Resister
Two Load Resisters Per LED have to be used
for Them to Work Correctly Error Free.

UPDATE..........

Just got the LED bulbs from HID,S DIRECT
super fast next day Delivery they are a 27 SMD so much Better than the 18 SMD i had
They also Dim Down for Side Light and the fit is Perfect and not loose at all
they look so much Brighter so Highly Recommended..

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/r580-7443-w21-5w-gen-2-canbus-27-smd-5050-led-bulbs-pair-white/

LED Lights on DRL mode.

Side Light or Dimmed Down mode..

work perfect and they are the Best i have found so far
So from now on i am only Recommending these LED DRL,S...from HID,S DIRECT.

ALSO i recommend Splicing and Shrink Wrapping the wires
instead of using the Snap Connectors
SEE POST. 48, Below for more info.

And not All 7443 LED Bulbs will Dim Down for the Side Light
Test the Bulbs first and make Sure they will Dim Down
if not rotate the bulbs till they do
and if they will still not dim down for side light
look at the Posts Below for a fix as the Pins Need
to be Moved about to Make that work Correctly.
SEE POST. 47, below for more info on this problem.

The DRL LED must dim down for sidelight and main lights
this is part of the MOT RULES.

AS WITH ALL ELECTRICAL HOW TOO,S.
you do this at your own risk if you follow the how to correctly
there should be no problems thank you.

Do all 4 of the clips go inside the light housing then??? Is there enough room???

they should sit in the cover so keep them close together
i don't like the clips my self and joint soldered the wires when i redid the two loads
but yes they will fit in there just

welcome Steve the LED work real well.

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - bannan - 18:th-Jul-2014

Did you use 50w load resistors for the drl and the sidelight? Can you not get away using a 25w and a 10w so they dont get as hot?

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 18:th-Jul-2014

50w no idea if you can use lower

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - Steve-Savalas - 19:th-Jul-2014

Tucpal, I emailed lush about these, but they said they only have cree bulbs in stock at the minute. They said that you got the cree + LED bulbs.... What's the difference!? Cheers.

CREE are really bright with the 360 degree led they make a real bright LED
but one LED blow on me a few weeks back i was sent a different type that are not cree and only have 8 led around them
and to be honest there no way near as bright as the first LED bulbs i was sent
i dont like the new bulbs and i am looking for a new set

I've got some ordered from custom led. They have the resistors too but going to try with lower wattage ones. Will let you know what they are like when they get them in. They had the number plate leds with built in load resistors. Have these been tried on the J by anyone?

no to the first link they are not dual filament bulbs and will not dim

no2 worth a go let me know how you get on with that

i would say these are the first bulbs i had and liked possibly but they look like they dim different

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 30:th-Jul-2014

bad news and good news

bad news first these turned up today
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W21-5W-7443-T20-580-WHITE-16W-HIGH-POWER-LED-TAIL-STOP-CAR-BULBS-/331154924111?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d1a5f224f

and they do not dim down and also are just to long and do not fit well at all
just like the replacement LED bulbs i was sent by lush they look very similar
and also do not hold well at in the holder and just about fit as they to are too long
the ones from lush were that lose one fell in the headlight and took about an hour to get out
so overall not impressed with the new bulbs at all
the first ones i was sent from lush were real good and i now know why
the problem is not with the LED light it is to do with the size of the led bulb
the reflector in the headlight needs a smaller bulb if it is too long the light misses the reflector
and light output is reduced

now for the good news i got these also and they work perfect and dim like they should
also error free when the load resistors are on them
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-INSIGNIA-09-P21W-5W-DRL-LIGHT-BULBS-7443-T20-6000K-18-SMD-XENON-WHITE-/321215614118?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AAstra+J&hash=item4ac9f14ca6

they look much brighter than the LED projector lights from lush that are just too long
if they were shorter and fitted better they would be ok but they dont
the ones below are smaller and they light up the reflector in the headlight a lot better

so i have given up in my quest for cree led.s as there all going to be to long or will not dim down
and this is the LED i now recommend.

there cheep there the right size they fit nice and perfect and they look good too
so i am sticking with this from now on.
i am still happy with the LED DRL.s and think these will be better in the long run

NOTE........

PLEASE SEE THE HOW TO ABOVE
THESE LED BULBS DID NOT LAST
AND I NOW ONLY RECOMMEND
THE ONES FROM HIDS DIRECT
IN THE ABOVE HOW TO POST.

nice mate, i was looking at there hid kit which is for the standard lights.

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/astra-mk6-h7-canbus-pro-hid-conversion-35w-xenon-kit/

But would they only be for the main beam or normal lights?
or would i need two kits for both h7's?

are these loads ok?

You would need 2X 50w loads mate

I strongly advise against putting HIDS into a standard halageon headlight

Yes you can tell when someone has them fitted in Halogen units as they blind you.

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - DNT - 19:th-Jan-2015

Hello guys, congratulations for your great forum. It's nice to see people loving our car so much. I'd like to contribute to your discussion with my experience in led's in order to pay you back for the help your how to's offered to me.
What I ve learned is that we need leds with Current that is above 1.75A in order not to have error messages. Unfortunately I haven't found any leds that exceed 1A yet. Most led sellers lie about led Wattage so you cant be sure about their Current. Anyway, the best leds I ve tried till now are these:

http://www.ledcarheadlightbulbs.com/photo/pl2704829-flexible_80w_car_t20_led_bulb_7440_7443_t20s_led_tail_light_turn_signal_bulbs.jpg

They do show up an error message if you dont have resistors as they are clearly nowhere near 80watts. BUT they are really powerfull, brighter than PIAA 27/8w I used before or any other led I ve tried and they are WHITE. Really white without a tint of blue. Any other led I tried was white with a tint of blue. So for me the winner are those leds. Kind of pain in the @@@ to fit them because they are a bit longer than the others but the result will reward you. I haven't fitted resistors yet so I have to press the side button twice in order to clear the messages but i plan to fit resistors.

Also check this out using a translator:

https://www.drive2.ru/l/2629091/

PS: I dont know why but I have a feeling that these leds may do the trick and work without resistors or errors. If someone could try them would be great because for now I'm broke!

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 19:th-Jan-2015

Thanks for the info and welcome to vxoc :cool

as you say and i found out not all LED bulbs
will dim down on the Astra J
the last link does look interesting
i may have a go in the summer but i have loads
so wont be able to tell if they will be error free without them.

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - DNT - 20:th-Jan-2015

tucpal Wrote:as you say and i found out not all LED bulbs

Any 7443 bulb will dim down. The bulbs that sellers sell are like this (left one):
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v7fbjojv_WY/T-wg7rjdU8I/AAAAAAAAArw/HCaA3nYrcis/s1600/7443+7440+wiring.jpg

But our bulb holder is like this(right one): minuses at one side, positives (drl and sidelights) at the other side. You can see the difference on the picture:

So all you have to do is realign the pins of the led bulb in order to fit to our bulb holder:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhYpU33TrDQ

And voila, leds work in both modes. Thats what i did with all the leds I ve tried so far and it worked like a charm

i get it thanks
i had seen the you tube clip
but i really never understood it
but now i have read this i do

that will be the reason some never dimmed down for me
and some did that should help others looking for LED bulbs
that in counter this problem.

yep you can do it that way it you like
same will apply just pick up the DRL and Side light and ground
you still would need two loads thou to be totally error free

but the second picture i am not to sure what i am looking at there
as the loom looks like it has melted
or that is just taped together

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - grahamfromoldham - 24:th-Jan-2015

I have fitted (as per Tucpal's 'How to LED DRL error free' guide) but I am having a headache with faults that have thrown up. I have installed the resistors, wiring and Scotchlok clips and LED bulbs correctly. Firstly, the left DRL will light intermittlently but it will light on the sidelight OK.

And now the following faults show intermittently:

Check left dipped beam lamp
Check right dipped beam lamp

Check left Daylight running lamp
Check right Daylight running lamp

When the lights are switched to auto, sidelights and DRL's light OK when its dark. When it is light outside, DRL's do not light in auto mode.

(When I turn off the automatic lights feature, the DRL's stay off. I never noticed this with the PIAA bulbs as I thought the DRL's stayed lit no matter what)

ANY help appreciated as always, Graham

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 24:th-Jan-2015

what bulbs have you used ?

and what load resisters ?

as long as you have used two loads on each DRL like this then they are correct

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - grahamfromoldham - 24:th-Jan-2015

Bulbs: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321215617110

Resistors: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171396959845

The only slight difference between my installation and yours is that I have used two Scotchloks for the Negatives instead of putting three wires into one Scotchlok as per your diagram.

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 24:th-Jan-2015

that is fine as long as both negatives from the loads are on the negative from the DRL holder
and one positive from each load goes to drl and side light
and both DRL,s have teo loads each left and right

i think the problem is the bulbs
do they dim down for side light
if you go to the how to and look at the last few posts from DNT
he talks about not all LED bulbs are set up for are set up
and shows how this can be corrected

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 24:th-Jan-2015

i need to put in the how to
too check the led bulbs work correctly
and they dim down for side light and drl
before you wire the loads in
if not the LED will need to have its pins move to the correct positions

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - grahamfromoldham - 24:th-Jan-2015

Its just tape I think

tucpal Wrote:you still would need two loads thou to be totally error free

Those resistors are suitable for both modes (check wiring at first picture) plus they have that anti-thermal rubber/sleeve preventing resistors cathing fire in case they stop functioning as they were supposed to

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 24:th-Jan-2015

i will show how to reline the pins on the led later on for you

also the loads will cancel the errors for the different wattage bulbs
but you will still get errors if the bulb has blown or the led pins on the led are wrong

HOW-TO LED DRL Error free for the Astra-J 5 door - tucpal - 24:th-Jan-2015
