RE: Rain sensor - sheppy1 - 11:th-May-2016

I don't see why you couldn't.. It would need programming though

Rain sensor the connection of how we do if we do we will need us to actively chart Have links with OBD

RE: Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 13:th-May-2016

If you want a rain sensor fitted that comes under other thread as it's a rain and light sensor.

It will be a new windscreen, sensor, loom maybe some other wiring adding VCI code (If GM will supply it).

RE: Rain sensor - Kado1111 - 13:th-May-2016

Do not have a single visual that I did want rain sensor, the cheap cost Can i am

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

Can you even buy a new windscreen which is setup for the auto dimming mirror/ rain and light sensor? What is different about the windscreen for rain and light sensor to a standard windscreen. I know the blacked out part is bigger for the auto dimm mirror and wiring cover, is the black film something that is required for the rain and light sensor?

It's such a shame that VCI requests are so hit and miss, especially when you consider that auto lights and wipers are an in essence a safety upgrade.

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

I have just read Tucpals how to on dimming mirror which answers my questions above... the factory screen for the dimming mirror I take it comes already fitted with the wiring harness holder fitted to it. The mirror then fixes onto the plate ant the bottom of the harness holder and the harness cover clips onto it.

My question would be, could you cut out some sticky vinyl in the shape of the mirror cover, then 3m the wiring harness holder to the vinyl and windscreen.

RE: Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 14:th-May-2016

The screen just comes with plastic lugs that the mounting plate (sold separate) slots on, it also has the tint (or whatever they want to call it) with the hole for the sensor camera HBA etc.

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

So, in essence, if you fit your own tint with hole for sensor, you should be able to find a way to stick the plate to the tint (3m tape onto the plate etc). Then it's just a case of fitting the mirror, connect the looms you have acquired, fit the cover to the plate and get a VCI code.

I know I've made that sound very simplistic, I know it isn't and you may not even get the code. In theory I prefer the look of the dimming mirror and assembly, even if it didn't work lol. That would be stage 1 to getting auto lights I presume if you did get the code?.

I also presume it would be better to try and acquire the VCI code before buying everything?

RE: Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 14:th-May-2016

You could try that although Tucpal failed with tint.

You will need to have the auto light switch fitted and also the rain / light sensor parts have to be fitted otherwise they will flat out refuse a VCI code. There May also be some wiring changes needed or wires adding.

I have a sensor here (if anyone wants to give it a go). so all anyone would need is a auto light switch and some ££'s to cover the fees GM charge me and I'll do it at cost.

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

I was thinking more in the line of fablon than tint to be honest... something that sticks like glue to the window which would then give good purchase for the cradle to be stuck to... If that makes sense. If you have to fit a auto light switch, do you also need to add wiring to that loom?

RE: Rain sensor - Kado1111 - 14:th-May-2016

If there is need to look at the ceiling light socket in the ceiling where there may be hope if the forecast holds

Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 14:th-May-2016

That connector should have all the wires in every car I've looked at does.

Where you may find wires need adding is the connector in the roof where mirror sensor/s loom plugs in

RE: Rain sensor - bhalay207 - 14:th-May-2016

This is still something I really want to do. I've been looking around for replacement windscreens. By looking I mean ebay but nothing seems to be cropping up, or not at a reasonable price anyway

Sent from my LG G4 using Tapatalk

What's Fablon?

Sent from my LG G4 using Tapatalk

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

You can get fablon from any diy stores, wilkos etc. It is a sticky back vinyl that comes in a roll, you peel the backing off and can stick it to all sorts, old worktops, cupboard doors etc. My thought is get some black fablon, cut it to the shape of the mirror loom cover, stick it to the windscreen so from the outside it would just look blacked out like factory.

Then stick 3m tape to the loom bracket and then stick the bracket onto the fablon, and then fit everything else (loom & mirror and cover for loom bracket). I would have thought that 3m tape would be strong enough to hold the loom bracket to the windscreen as it pretty much holds no weight... well that's the theory anyway.

Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 14:th-May-2016

I've only ever seen standard screens on eBay TBH if your honing to change the screen it's got to be better to use a new screen.

I paid £250 for the GM screen and £40 postage (pallet).

Yes there isn't much weight atall although I'd be more inclined to maybe use tiger seal or no-nails as thinking of heat from the sun heaters etc will only soften the glue on 3m

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 14:th-May-2016

I suppose no nails or tiger seal would work as I would only be sticking it to the film rather than the screen.

I have just been offered auto dimming mirror with sensor, loom from mirror to headliner socket, loom windscreen bracket and cover for £80... does that sound like an okay deal?

Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 14:th-May-2016

If I tell you the mirror on its own new is over £300 loom iirc is £10 covers are around £5 each side not 100% sure on the bracket or sensor tho.

Mirrors have sold for as low as £20 tho (if the seller doesn't know what they have)

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 15:th-May-2016

So, in theory, if I get the mirror, loom, all of the sensors for that loom, casing and bracket, auto wiper stalk, auto light switch and a prayer I will have everything in place barring the vci code for auto lights and wipers and dimmable mirror?

That's 'if' they would supply it... and judging by some of the posts over the weeks I get the feeling GM don't seem to want to help anyone with retrofits.

RE: Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 15:th-May-2016

Auto dim mirror doesn't need a VCI code that is a plug & play retrofit.

GM seem very hit & miss with VCI codes I seem to find if their SPS system says no it's a no. but as said util someone try's for Auto lights we won't know.

it was the same with the AFL alot of people said it won't work and GM won't allow it well it did work and they did allow it now their people over the water doing it and also getting VCI codes.

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 15:th-May-2016

What happens with VCI request, does the car need to be hooked up first and then the request is made... or can you just pay someone like yourself to try and retrieve the code and then get it coded to the car or do you need to make 2 visits to get it done?

Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 15:th-May-2016

As said all parts need to be fitted, then the car is plugged on and it scans the car and creates a VCAP file this file is auto uploaded to GM then you fill a form in with all the details.

Then you wait for GM to come back.

If people want to use someone else to enter a code that is fine with me as long as the person knows 100% what they are doing and can answer my questions. Once I'm happy with the person someone wants to use I will gladly send the VCI code over.

I wouldn't send it over to someone who doesn't have clue what they are doing.

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 15:th-May-2016

So, who is it that can do this, I know you have the kit and know how to get the VCAP file and fill out the form, but you're at least 3hrs drive away from me. Is this something that other specialists can/will do i.e people like yourself or garages who would be nearer? I would really like to get this done but the thought of buying all the kit and the best part of a day out just to send off a request that we might not be successful with seems extreme. If I were in Dorset I would have already ordered the parts last night.

This socket friends still do not understand how it works

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 16:th-May-2016

How long does it usually take to hear back from GM regarding whether the request has been successful?

RE: Rain sensor - stigeye - 17:th-May-2016

Do you know whether the wiper stalk is different with auto wipers? Also, would the rain, light sensors and loom be different on a 2015 elite, or should I say would the mirror, loom, sensors from a 2015 elite be compatible with a 2012 Astra? I've had a look on eBay and all the wiper stalks look the same, so not sure if it's just programming that's needed or wiper stalk also.

Just noticed that there is a difference in wiper stalks... will check on our car shortly

This is our wiper stalk, does anyone know if this is different to those with auto wipers?...

Rain sensor - irmartyn - 17:th-May-2016

I was told that it's the same not 100% sure.

Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 17:th-May-2016

Early models had a bigger sensor you need a small one will look on eBay for you.

As to wiper stalk pm your reg and I'll compare yours to mine but iirc they are the same.

Cheers, I've pm'd you my REG. If I purchased the set that was offered to me which is basically everything I need i.e loom, sensors, mirror and harness cover from the 2015 reg are you saying that one of the sensors on that loom is the wrong size. Cheers for all the info btw.

RE: Rain sensor - Rusty2009 - 18:th-May-2016

I believe so mate that would be different parts.

As far as I know it's a case of turning the option on in the IPC. would be a different loom thou.
