GTC Auto Gearbox - bruce_19 - 29:th-Mar-2016

So I am just wondering if the auto box on the GTC has a 'learning' function.

I used to own a Mitsubishi FTO which the gearbox 'learned' your driving style you had to reset the gearbox ECU and you put it in manual mode and drive for half an hour and it would 'learn' your driving style so would drive like this while in auto mode till you reset it again.

That's what I was thinking but to me the car seems to stay in gear longer than I normally would I can just drive it in manual mode.

Don't get me wrong when I am giving the car welly on the back roads its fine and would change roughly when I do but when in slow driving the car doesn't seem to want to change till about 2.5-3000 rpm when I would normally change it 2000 in slow traffic.

It would be a nice feature to be able to do this as on the FTO it might have been an 18 year old car but it still worked perfectly.

I own a 2.0cdti elite & find the gearbox quite smooth. If you lift your throttle pedal slightly it will down change faster. I rarely use the manual function now. I like the auto box, considering I've mainly owned manuals in the past. As far as I know vaux can recalabrate the box with their software.
I'm generally quite light footed. Find it changes quite early for me, which I like.

I like how smooth it is as well but sometimes it doesn't change when I would.

Normal driving its great but when its cold to begin with its not as smooth as it can be but I can live with it.

The FTO would learn your town driving then your country driving.

I have contacted a few companies who have said they can improve the change time but I have decided this car isn't getting anything else done too it as I will be putting everything into my new project.

Bruce,
Mine is smooth. You could have it recalabrated by vaux, would expect it to cost you under an hours labour. My old box was lumpy, especially when cold. Some of the down changes were harsh too. After the new one was fitted & recalibrated it's as good as an auto box torque converter could be. I can get it to change at virtually any rev range. Just a case of lifting off the throttle slightly. I rarely use the manual function.
Even when I boot it. I tend to lift my foot off slightly so it does not rev over 4k.
I'd also change the box oil every 4 years or 40k. Not stipulated by vaux. As they say it's "sealed for life". I good Indy gearbox specialist said it was better to change it more frequently than that.

It's due a service in the next month or so only because the oil life is down at 18% and the car has only done 6k since I bought it but I will service the car when it says it needs.
MOT is due arround the same so will get it all done at the same time and get them to have a look at the box as well. Could be an expensive January lol.

Once I have paid off half the car I think I will trade it in against another GTC but think it will be a manual maybe even a VXR if the wife is feeling generous lol

If its still under warranty, should be free. Any warranty work, that is.
