Hi All

Always felt my GTC 6spd box was a bit notchy 1st-2nd, well yesterday it finally became a more serious issue and now the car will not hold in 2nd under any load it just wants to jump back into neutral so nursed it home doing 1st - 3rd changes and dumped it on the drive.

I've built gearboxes before but not for anything Vauxhall - I have seen pics of gearboxes rebuilt in situ by removing the wheel, arch and casing to reveal gear clusters but I think that was an earlier astra possibly with M32 box. The car is about 3yr 8 month old so out of 3 year VX warranty even though it only has 25k on it. Really pissed off with it. Can these be done in situ too or is it a gearbox out job? And where might I get spare parts other than the dreaded dealership?

I'm assuming it's the dogs on 3rd gear... it changes into 2nd fine, 2nd is still there not completely blown just won't hold it

Any help would be great... towing the line between needing the car back asap but not wanting to get royally spanked taking it to VX.
I'm no mechanic so cant really advise other than to ask if you've tried doing a gear linkage adjustment?

Here's a link to the howto https://www.vxoc.org.uk/forum/Thread-How...ge-F40-Box you never know it may solve the problem.
I'd be onto Vx no matter whether in warranty or not, this is not designed to fail so badly.

If it helps mine is 4 years old with 120,000 miles so they do not always fail.

I rang customer care and they said it has to be diagnosed by a dealership which I can understand but I'm fucked if I'm paying 70 quid for them to "diagnose" it. All it needs is someone to drive it 100m down the road and back.

Ignorance must be bliss but when you actually know a bit about cars the way dealers etc speak to the general public really is irritating. We're all just cash cows.
I'd pay it then claim it back once they do...

I must admit, I agree with

Pay the money for diagnostics, even if you pay them half and hours labour rate and take it back to Vauxhall. My car has just hit 60k and touch wood all is OK.

Which engine do you have? I'm guessing you have the infamous m32. Will be if it's the 1.4t, 1.6t. If you have full vaux history I'd take it to vaux. As you may get up to an 80% contribution from them, even if out of warranty. If not, I'd then take it to an independent gearbox specialist. In my experience even the revised m32's have probs.

He has 2.0cdti which has the F40 gearbox.

Cheers. Same advice applies. Although the f40 6 speed box is usually more reliable. Not in his case.
Hi, my astra is having gear box issues. My local dealer was told there is a EB for the symptoms you describe, popping out of 2nd gear so they replacedc2nd gear on my car which didn't fix the issue so twits going back in.

Hopefully this helps as if there is a EB then vauxhall know it's an issue
Hi I ended up getting another box out of a 4K mile Astra that had been hit up the arse and fitted it myself. If anyone wants any bits I still have my old box. All gears fine apart from 2nd. Everyone I've asked has said you can't get parts I.e. Synchro and gears for them. It was an epic job to change the box but I had no confidence I was going to get any contribution by VX...
