Full Version: Additives for Diesel engine ?

Hey guys, I have been wondering about additives, I know its a controversial subject but I would like to know your opinion on this subject.

First, I have an Opel Astra sports tourer 2011 1.7L 81kw Diesel break. I use once er month premium diesel that has additives in it, the difference I felt over the regular diesel is slightly better response of the engine, but that's it.

Second, of what I red is that there is 2 types of additives. Oil additives & Diesel/petrol additives. both have different roles, from my understanding Diesel additives collects the water particles and makes them bigger so that the diesel filter can catch them without letting them pass to the injectors, also removing any carbon residuals. The engine Oil additives makes some kind of seal around the pistons thus making them more efficient ?

My questions are :

 1. Are additives good ?
 2. Do engine oil additives give a boost in power & makes the engine runs smoother ?
 3. What about premium diesel additives? Are those better than normal diesel with manually added additives ?
 4. What kind of additives you guys use ?
Once every few months I put a can of PRO-TEC in when filling up.

It was my mechanic (VOLVO trained in the Navy) who told to use this stuff a few years ago on my old veccy (with that car you could put in into the fuel filter and pull it though the engine NEAT).

It still has great results mixing in the tank tho.

As for oil additives never really thought about it no doubt VX would void the warranty if they found out.
I was recommended by a mechanic/garage owner to an oil addictive called Activ8. There is a demo video on Youtube here, so make your own mind up:

I added it a few years ago to my Astra H I had. I don't remember it making a vast difference to the 5% fuel saving they claim to make but I felt better knowing it was sloshing about the engine. For cars up to 1800cc you need a 125ml bottle which is about £21.95 from Ebay.

Rusty2009 grahamfromoldham Thank you both. Well I made my mind & ill be adding what rusty told me PRO-TEC because it costs only 6.5 pounds in my country. I will test it for a few months then ill be giving my opinion. Rusty2009 Just to be safe, should I pour the whole bottle in a full tank with normal diesel not the premium?

£6.50 that's good I pay £9.00 here from a private seller.

Put it in with any fuel mate just put it in then fill up otherwise it won't mix with the fuel.
